Cyclocross?

Just wondered if anyone could give me some advice about potentially having a go at some cyclocross events this winter. I think I can stick some knobblies on my old road bike and put on some more specific pedals, although not sure which type you'd need to avoid getting clogged or would it be best to use toeclips with trail shoes etc?
I've had a look at some websites but most of the novice friendly events seem to be aimed at the under 12s. Anybody else take part in these who could give me some pointers?

Cheers,

Alex

Sunday 21st August ride

Riders: Jake, Nick, Luke, Steve and Rick.

We decided to go south and east, via Headley, Pebble Hill, Betchworth, Salfords, Outwood, Blindley Heath, Bletchingley, Merstham, before stopping for cream cake and refreshment at Fanny's Farm. Then back to Epsom via Chipstead and Banstead

Riding time was 2:46:48 to do 43.6 miles, average speed 15.8mph, elevation gain of 3,000 feet, 2,500 calories burned (and 2,000 calories put back on.!)

A nice sunny morning. No punctures but we could have easily come off on the freshly chipped roads.....at Chipstead !!.....where the loose chippings had formed chipping dunes.

Congratulations to Luke and his wife for announcing the start of a family due in March...well that was the excuse he gave for not coming to Majorca with us in April. We did explain that he might need a holiday by then. Rick can't make it either as it will still be school term.

That leaves me, Nick, Jake and Gary...any more takers for Majorca?

Two Back Up - A Tandem in the Pyrenees

I've given the Pyrenees a fair bashing on a solo for the last couple of seasons; now it was time to give the tandem a try. Maggie and I based ourselves in Arreau for the first part of our trip - a very pleasant little town handy for a few classic passes. We had a very good time, and did a lot of what we had planned. The weather was pretty Pyreneen, which is to say hot and dry, and cold and wet, and some in between too.

Our first pass was the Peyresourde, which went off very well. The next was the Aspin, and we had planned to follow it with the Tourmalet, but a temperature of 34 degrees on the first few ramps out of St Marie de Campan led us to think better of it, so we left it for a cooler day.

The next couple of days were wet, so one day we had a good time visiting friends, and the next drove through the Bielsa Tunnel to Spain, where it was hot and sunny. Some tandemists we met told us it had been like that for weeks. Ho hum. A good ride, then back to cloudy France for supper.

Cool and clear the next morning, so we tucked in the Tourmalet while it was available. A good ride - some wisps of cloud above La Mongie, but clear at the top and applause for the tandem, which was nice.

For our journey home we had planned to take in one of the Voies Vertes, having enjoyed one in the Ardennes last season. This year we stopped in Burgundy and rode the Veloroute des Vignobles between Chalons and Beaune - fantastic riding though some of the world's most prestigious vineyards, followed by an excellent lunch in a beautiful medieval city. Sixty easy miles in the warm sunshine - we'll be back for more.

August 14th

I still haven't got around to enlisting on blogs for Mi-week Wayfarers or KPRC, so wondered if you would pass on the attached about park closures on Sunday 14th August (not a great camera shot, but just about legible!), Regards Ken

Anerley 50 Aug 7.

Six KPRC riders entered the Anerley 50 and Pete and Jake had flagged it up as an event where we could win the Surrey/Sussex Team. Some how or other Ann did not get the message so Ron is filling the gap while munching some very good cake provided by the organisers. A well run event and though fairly windy we all managed to finish in the dry. Commiseration's to Philip for puncturing. Well done Jake you beat me on VET standard by 3 secs (teach me not to stop for a "P" next time drank too much!)
Well done Steve you are now "Mr. Consistency" doing virtually the same time in both your 50's this year and consolidating your lead at the top of the Men's Points table. (Why did you not get 6 points and Brian 7 points when 6 entered and 5 rode?)
Congratulations to Brian on two counts: 1. you did an excellent time and pleased to see you are recovering. 2. You did a brilliant job at H/C and on basis that you used 2hr.10min to calculate you got it about right, at least in my case but how did you assess that I would go 5 Min's quicker than my earlier 50 this year?
